BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASS

Prerequisite:  None
This is an eight-week course for older puppies (12 weeks and older) and dogs (adult) without previous training. It is especially appropriate for puppies that have had socialization classes such as those held in vet clinics or any dog that has had less than eight weeks of previous training.  The KCKC Basic class teaches you the principles of positive reinforcement training.  You apply these principles while teaching your dog controlled walking in the presence of other dogs and distractions as well as sit, down, come and stay.  You and your dog will learn how to integrate these new skills into your day-to-day living such as greeting guests into your home or meeting dogs/people on your outings.  Problem behaviors will be addressed as needed.   A certificate of completion (and a treat for your dog) will be earned at the end of this class.  This class also teaches the skills needed for dogs less than one year of age to meet the requirements for AKC's S.T.A.R. Puppy program.

THERAPY DOG

Spreading smiles, bringing joy to people. Our Alliance of Therapy Dog volunteer teams do this on a daily basis. We visit seniors in their homes at facilities. We participate in dog bite prevention events at a local school. We visit hospital patients! We are hospice volunteers. The populations we serve are diverse!

If you think you and your dog have the ‘right stuff’, then consider joining our therapy dog preparation course. During the four weeks, we will learn how to become an effective volunteer and explore opportunities in our community. We will learn the requirements to pass the Alliance of Therapy Dog assessment and observations. On the last day of class, we may even go off site for a visit!

The Therapy Dog class requires that your dog be a least 1 year of age.

If you have questions or would like to chat about the exciting world of volunteering that awaits you, contact Shannon Lloyd, ATD Tester/Observer at slloyd2@hickorytech.net or 507-382-8784.  You may so request an application from Shannon.

 CONFORMATION CLASS

Prerequisite:  None

Conformation classes run 7:30 - 8:30 pm on Wednesdays. PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP MORE THAN 10 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS IS TO START.  Any days class doesn't run will be listed on Breaking Announcements.

Our goal is to teach you to be a great handler with the skills and knowledge to compete in the conformation ring from your first entry to Grand Champion.

Our classes teach you critical handling skills to bring out the best in your dog and you whether you choose showing in the AKC or UKC.  We begin with fundamentals and then refine your skills with constructive critique and suggesting areas for you to work on outside of class.

Classes  will usually start with a standard run through similar to walking into a dog show.  This will be followed by additional run-throughs where critical handling skills will be tailored to your and your dog  teaching what you need to know to make your dog a champion.

Class size varies every night.  We will try to limit the ring to 6-7 dogs at a time to allow people to train multiple dogs, take breaks. or leave as needed.

Special times can be arranged for larger numbers of the same breed in preparation for specialty events if requested.  Please call if you plan to bring in large groups of dogs. 507-344-1159

Proof of rabies vaccination needs to be presented for each dog.  Check in will be listed at the desk. Cost is $10.00 per dog per night.  Punch cards may be purchased: 6 classes for $50 or 12 classes for $100.00.
